Ownership of the Tower
After the fall of the Ottoman Empire in 1836, Spyridon Markellos, a native of Aegina and great-great-grandfather of the current owners, bought a very large area in the area that is today known as Lagonisi and included the tower in its original form.
Olive Oil and Rural Development
The tower became a centre of olive oil production, along with other agricultural products (vines, wheat) and became a source of employment for the inhabitants of all the surrounding areas. The historic olive mill with its huge millstones is still preserved today.
Discovery of the Kouros of Anavyssos

Legacy of Anthi Melissourgou
Anthi Melissourgou, leaving 50% of the estate to the ‘Anthi Melissourgou’ bequest in 1939, wished to establish an Agricultural School for the deaf and dumb. Although the school has not been completed to this day, her intention is still alive in the memory of the region.
German Occupation
During World War II, the tower was occupied by the German occupation forces and used as a military headquarters.
Renovations
The family brought electricity to the area and connected Pyrgos to the water supply network. These formed the basis for the next phases of the estate's physical development.
Recent history
The Melissourgos family continues to preserve the Tower and their heritage, combining history with tourism and educational activities without the slightest alteration of the historic buildings and the environment.
The Modern Period
Since 2004 until today, various improvements, additions, renovations have been made, so that the estate serves the current needs of daily life and its economic self-sufficiency, combining history with cultural and educational activities.
